Zone Overview
Zone 9 is a scenic safari zone in the Phalodi Range, famous for the Chakal River landscape, Kuwalji forest, rich birdlife, rocky valleys, and excellent opportunities to observe diverse wildlife in a quieter part of Ranthambore National Park
Zone 9 is located in the Phalodi Range of Ranthambore National Park and is commonly known as Kuwalji Zone. Visitors reach this safari route through the Kundal tourism approach road before entering the dedicated Kuwalji Gate. This zone was developed to expand wildlife tourism while protecting the ecological balance of the reserve and providing visitors access to a different landscape from the traditional Singh Dwar routes. The safari route passes through several important forest locations including Kuwalji, New Talai, Ghati Ka Tiraha, Kamleshwar Mandir View Point, Chakal Nadi Road, Pandu Kho, Gajipur Tiraha, Gajipur, and Devpura. These locations represent a combination of riverine habitat, rocky terrain, forest valleys, and open woodland, making Zone 9 one of the most geographically diverse safari circuits in Ranthambore. One of the defining features of Zone 9 is the Chakal River (also referred to as Chakal Nadi), which supports wildlife throughout the year. The river corridor, seasonal pools, and surrounding vegetation attract herbivores, reptiles, and numerous bird species, creating favourable conditions for predator movement. The terrain consists of rugged Aravalli hills, dry deciduous forest, rocky escarpments, seasonal streams, open valleys, and grassland patches. This habitat supports a wide range of mammals and reptiles while offering visitors a peaceful safari experience away from the busiest tourism routes. Zone 9 has become increasingly popular among wildlife photographers because of its dramatic landscapes and relatively low safari traffic. Wide valleys, natural rock formations, riverbeds, and panoramic viewpoints create outstanding opportunities for both wildlife and landscape photography. Wildlife commonly recorded in Zone 9 includes the Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Striped Hyena, Jackal, Jungle Cat, Sambar Deer, Chital (Spotted Deer), Nilgai, Wild Boar, Hanuman Langur, Indian Hare, Marsh Crocodile, Indian Monitor Lizard, and several reptile species. Wildlife movement changes naturally with the seasons, and sightings depend entirely on animal behaviour rather than fixed locations. Zone 9 is also one of the better safari zones for birdwatching. Visitors regularly observe Crested Serpent Eagles, Changeable Hawk Eagles, Indian Peafowl, Grey Hornbills, Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, Painted Storks, Herons, Cormorants, Owls, Drongos, Woodpeckers, and numerous migratory waterbirds during winter months. For photographers, the early morning safari offers beautiful mist over the river valley and soft natural light, while evening safaris produce warm golden tones across the rocky hills and forest canopy. The combination of hills, river, forest, and wildlife makes Zone 9 one of the most visually rewarding safari experiences in Ranthambore. Visitors should remember that Ranthambore is a protected natural ecosystem. Although Zone 9 has recorded memorable tiger sightings over the years, no safari guide, operator, or booking platform can guarantee sightings of any particular animal. Every safari remains unique, and appreciating the complete biodiversity of the forest makes the experience far more rewarding.
